Why is God made out to be strange?

does God really need your worship and love 24/7? if he really is divine and perfect as church would like you believe isnt he supposed to be above it? even mere mortals can be above it like Mother Teresa or Mahatma Gandhi- did they ask for mindless worship? why does church attribute God with qualities like perfection, glory and being of divine nature, but bring Him down right after with "well you have to worship Him and devote yourself to Him and the whole nine yards" doesnt it sound too earthly and kind of primitive for perfect concept like God? why does church contradict itself so blatantly?
