What is so bad about ethanol?

There has been a large smear campiagn on ethanol the past couple of years in the media. It recently came out that it was all the doing of the GMA (grocery manufacturers of America) that started this campaign, blaming high cost of food on ethanol. Well now that our fuel cost have come back down why havent our food costs?
